Raise the roof for Winnipeg

The success of Flynn Canada Limited

You wouldn’t know it, but if it were not for Flynn Canada Limited, Winnipeg’s downtown would look very different than it currently does.

Flynn Canada Limited, better known simply as “Flynn,” is Canada’s only trade contractor of complete building envelope solutions. But like so many Winnipeg success stories, Flynn’s growth into a successful national trade contractor is built on modesty, reputation and good old fashioned elbow grease.

Flynn began as a humble commercial roofing company in 1978 based out of Winnipeg. Over the next decade, it branched out from commercial roofing contracting and diversified into more complex architectural projects. Over time, Flynn found a niche in its industry — “building envelope products and services” — and began to specialize in their development. Building envelopes refer to the area that separates conditioned space from unconditioned space or the outdoors, which are vital to the operation of any modern commercial building. By focusing on building envelopes, Flynn expanded across Canada. For 11 years in a row, Flynn has been named one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies, earning the Platinum Award from the prestigious and nationally-recognized award body. Today, Flynn employs over 3,000 people across Canada, and is continuing its aggressive yet strategic expansion across the country.

In addition to its success in the business world, Flynn has also given back to the community. Flynn was a founding member of the Green roofs for Healthy Cities imitative that aims to create environmentally friendly and sustainable green spaces on the tops of buildings. Flynn has also been a proud supporter of many charities including the Canadian Diabetes, local schools and professional sports organizations.

Many of the recognizable landmarks in Winnipeg have been aided by Flynn’s craftsmanship. Local projects include glass structures across Manitoba, such as parts of the MTS Centre, the Winnipeg Convention Centre, and the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, just to name a few.

Nationally, Flynn has been instrumental in a variety of high profile projects that require unique designs, including the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina.

With the continued success of companies like Flynn, Winnipeg can continue to be proud of its entrepreneurial spirit, as well as its wonderful and uniquely designed architecture.
